At the 2017 CES in Las Vegas last month, Hyundai unveiled a self-driving Ioniq concept vehicle that places the autonomous tech out of sight, relocating the lidar from the roof to behind the front bumper cover. The result looks more like a normal vehicle and less like come vision from the future.

The lidar system navigates the vehicle without human assistance thanks to a windshield-header-mounted camera grouping, the GPS antenna and an array of automated vehicle technology such as the adaptive cruise control's forward-facing radar system, lane-keeping assist cameras and blind spot monitors.

Thanks to a license Hyundai was granted to test autonomous cars in urban environments, the Ioniq concept was able to offer media members rides on select Las Vegas streets. The vehicle is also ready to handle everyday driving challenges like pedestrian traffic, stop signs, road construction, school zones and shopping centers.
